Lovely, lovely buildings

I really love some buildings - they are like people to me. Or rather, like trees with personality; slow, enduring, reassuring in their passivity, constant in their characters, strong, yet terribly vulnerable to unkindness, unable to escape abuse.

You will have guessed from the above that I am not really talking about works of architecture, but buildings. Some of the buildings I love are works of architecture, but most are not.

Buildings are generally rather humble, or sweetly naive about their pretensions. Architecture rarely achieves either of these conditions.
